Bandcamp has dealt a particularly heavy blow at an extremely painful time for anyone selling remixes on its platform by banning outright all remixes and edits using samples that aren’t cleared.
While it is important to say that Bandcamp are well within their rights doing this, the timing is certainly less than perfect with DJs and producers suffering very hard in the pocket since lockdown began.
The feeling is that Bandcamp has succumbed to fat-cat record label bosses and the decision to implement this at this precise moment has felt to many like a kick in the teeth when they are already down.
Of course bootlegging and remixing is certainly a vast grey area, but dance music has built its entire industry off the back of sampling and remixing other peoples music and this decision has left many frustrated.
WBBL said about the change “Obviously we don’t really have a leg to stand on legally, but sampling and remixing has been a MASSIVE part of our culture since the beginning. This is incredibly bad timing.”
Reportedly Bandcamp are starting to remove accounts with bootlegged content, so users may seen their accounts disappear in days and at the worst possible time.
